Alga Invasion
A creeping alga,
Caulerpa sertularioides,
is destroying the coral
reefs in the Gulf of
Papagayo, in the Costa
Rican Northern Pacific.
Scientists from the
University of Costa Rica
(UCR) said that the alga
is taking the place of
the local marine flora
associated to coral,
thus markedly modifying
the food chain.
Marine biologist Cindy
Fernandez issued a
series of
recommendations aimed at
lowering the impact of
the alga on fishing and
tourism, as part of an
effort by several
institutions to counter
the attack. |
