Guatemalan Docs Go on Strike
A partial strike in Guatemala´s health sector continues on Monday, and no possible solution to the crisis caused by a shortage of medical supplies at state-owned hospitals is on sight.

The strike, which affects outpatient services at the Roosevelt Hospital, in Guatemala City, and several departmental clinics, might spread to all hospitals throughout the country.

The government instructed the army to set up an improvised campaign hospital at Campo Marte, where only some referred patients were treated on Monday.

However, trade union leaders said that the measure is aimed at covering up the shortage of medicines, equipment and inputs at the country´s hospitals.

The conflict in the health sector began on June 9, when residents started a protest against the shortage of medicines, including antibiotics and anti-hypertensive drugs, and against bad conditions at the operating rooms.

The strike ended 48 days later, when they reached an agreement with the government, which committed itself to supplying hospitals immediately, but they decided to resume the strike last week, as they considered that their demands were not met.
