Nicaragua Rallies against
Corruption
Thousands of Nicaraguans staged
a rally to fight corruption and
poverty to regain national
dignity, led by a civil society
organization against liberal
policies from the current
government.
Klaus Stadthagen, leader of the
"Movimiento por Nicaragua," said
Sunday on a TV program that
about 10,000 residents in the
northern departments of Jinotega,
Nueva Segovia and Matagalpa
attended the demonstration.
Among other demands, activists
requested the Electoral Supreme
Council (CSE) to distribute
identity cards to 500,000 people
so they can vote during the
November general elections.
The "Movimiento por Nicaragua"
was the protagonist in 2005 of
several street protests against
constitutional reform projects
that reduce power to the
Executive.
The CSE leadership denied the
existence in Nicaragua of
500,000 people without basic
documents to vote during this
year's polls.
