Most Panamanians Support Canal
Widening
Fifty-four percent of Panamanian
citizens supports widening of
the Panama Canal, and will vote
in favor of it in the October 22
referendum, a lower percent in
3.5 points to the one reached
two months ago, a poll revealed
here Monday.
A poll made by Ditcher Neira for
newspaper La Prensa said that
17.1 percent rejects
construction of a third set of
locks. In June, there was 19.8
percent against this
construction.
The poll said that the number of
undecided people went up from
22.3 to 28.5 percent, and
authorities said that the
preliminary electoral padron is
equal to more than 2.122 million
people with the right to vote.
A green card will be used to say
YES and another red card to say
NO. The first partial results
will be let known the same day
of the election.
The cost of the construction
will be of 5.25 billion dollars
and it will be made in seven
years, starting in 2007.
Less than three months for the
referendum, followers and
detractors are in campaign in
favor and against.
The Authority of the Panama
Canal (ACP) promised that during
the construction works monetary
contributions to the Panamanian
budget would not be diminished,
and the construction will not
affect environment.
