School To Be Sold at Auction For Non Payment of
Debt
For the first time in the history of Costa
Rica, some 200 students may be left with a school to go to this
Wednesday if the school board doesn't pay up it's debt, as ordered by a
local court.
The Juzgado Civil de San Carlos has ordered the Liceo de Boca Arenal de
San Carlos be sold at auction resulting from a debt the Junta
Administrativa - school board - made in 2001 with Pedro Chacón who sold
the school board the land the school is built on.
The land was purchased for ¢4 million colones (us$8.500 dollars) and was
to be paid in three months time. But that never happened. Chacón
now is owed ¢9.7 million colones (us$20.600 dollars), that includes
interest for the last three years.
According to the school board head, Margarita Retana, when they got over
their head with the purchase of the land and the cost of construction
and equipping the school, they turned to the Ministro de Educación
Pública (MEP) and Education Minister, Antonio Bolaños, for help who told
them not to worry and that the debt would be paid.
Notwithstanding, the debt was never paid and Chacón decided to take
legal action to recover, which may end with the sale of the school on
Wednesday, something that has come as a big surprise to the students and
the parents.
Lidia Murillo, director of the school has chosen not to talk to
reporters who have been pressing for information and what will happen to
the students if the school is auctioned off.
The initial bidding for the school will start at ¢87 million colones
(us$185.500 dollars) according to court documents.
