Is It the Rainy Season Already?
Why the rain? It's not the rainy season
yet? were some of the questions being asked yesterday by many when San
José awakened with cloudy skies, drizzle and closed with a down pour in
the downtown area in the late afternoon.
The Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN) - the weatherman - says this
is not normal for this time of year.
The IMN explains that a low pressure system stationed over Costa Rica is
causing the rain in most areas since Sunday night. Some flights to Costa
Rica were delayed due to the rain and thunderstorms in the area.
Most of the national territory experienced rain at some time during the
night and in the day, surprising many who are used to the high and dry
temperatures of the season. For the first time since the last rainy
season, umbrellas vendors took to the streets of downtown yesterday.
An umbrella around the area of the Correos de Costa Rica cost ˘1.000
colones (us$2.10) to keep one's head dry.
According to the IMN, the low pressure system will linger for today and
possibly into tomorrow, causing scattered rain to downpours in some
areas. The weather condition should improve by notlater than Thursday.
The rainy season typically begins in the Central Valley (San José and
surrounding areas) the first week of May and by mid May in the
Guanacaste region. The Pacific south areas see the first signs of the
rainy season by the end of May, while the Caribbean coast gets it rains
earlier, beginning the season next week.
For the time being, the weatherman, says that while the low pressure
system hovers over Costa Rica, you should look up to the sky and carry
your umbrella according to the clouds.
Not much comfort, but at least we know why.
