Former President Calderón's
Lawyer Quits Him
Gonzalo Castellón announced
yesterday his resignation as
legal counsel for former
president Rafael Angel Calderón.,
who is tied to the Caja-Fischel
scandal that saw some us$9
million commission paid on a
us$39 million loan fro the
government of Finland to the
Caja Costarricense de Seguro
Social.
In a press release, Castellón
said he gave notice to his
former client after being by his
side since his arrest last fall
and was instrumental in having a
lower court decision to keep the
Calderón in La Reforma prison to
house arrest.
Castellón said he formally made
his resignation known to the
Fiscalía de Delitos Económicos
del Primer Circuito Judicial de
San José, saying only of a
difference of opinion with
respect to the defense tactics,
as the reason.
According to Castellón there is
a disagreement between he and
his client over the direction of
the defence that will
incovenient him in the future.
Castellón added Juan Marco
Rivero will continue defending
former president Calderón.
