Search of Cabinet Minister; Low Salary And
Short Term Is A Deterrent For Many
Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias, is
having a difficult time filling the cabinet
post open left open in March by the
controversy surrounding Roberto Dobles,
minister for the Ministerio de Ambiente,
Energía y Telecomunicaciones (Minaet).
The prezs has been considering a number of
professionals to fill the post, however,
some do not fit the bill and most have
declined, according to the ministro de la
presidencia, Rodrigo Arias.
Arias did not reveal the names of those
being considered.
The problem in filling this post is the
complexity of the post and the low salary.
The Minaet is in the hot seat as the country
opens its telecommunications industry after
a 60 year monopoly held by ICE and
environmental challenges.
The base salary for the ministerial position
is ¢1.199.300 (us$2.100) monthly.
"Many have not accepted because it is a
complicated ministry and the current
position is for less than a year", said
Arias.
The qualifications of the position include a
knowledge of energy, electricity,
environment and telecommunications,
according to the governments press agent,
Mayi Antillón.
Dobles left the post on May 10 after
controversy surrounding benefits received by
family members in a number of government
contracts in Puntarenas. The Fiscalía Genera
is investigating.
The position is being temporarily filled by
the ministry's vice-minister, Jorge
Rodríguez, with the support of the
vice-minister of telecommunications, Hannia
Vega.
Rodrigo Arias said "We will keep on looking,
hopefully we will end up with the right
person and make an announcement soon".
