Costa Rica Cuts Coffee Harvest Forecast

Costa Rica will harvest 1.59 million 60-kg bags of coffee in the 2008/09 season, 15.4 percent less than was produced in the previous cycle, the national coffee institute Icafe said.

"The forecast fell due to climatalogical factors and because of the high cost of fertilizer," said Denia Munoz, an Icafe researcher.

Icafe had previously estimated that the harvest would yield 1.757 million bags this coffee year. Costa Rica produced 1.88 million 60-kg bags of coffee in 2007/08.

Coffee prices have been rising due to an anticipated shortfall of around 2.5 million bags of Colombian coffee. Central American producers have struggled to fill the gap due to weather problems and high labor and fertilizer costs.
