Costa Rica to Join Petrocaribe

Costa Rica is getting ready to join Petrocaribe during the Petrocaribe summit to be held next month, member of Costa Rican Parliament Angel Rodriguez announced on Wednesday.

In his role as Chair of the Energy and Mining Committee, Rodriguez recalled that formalities for Costa Rica to enter the alliance started in September last year and the country's authorities are currently studying several scenarios to define the crude supply quota to be assumed once the country joins Petrocaribe, estimated at a minimum of 20,000 barrels a day.

Costa Rica has a refinery with a daily capacity to process 25,000 barrels of light oil.

Immediate benefits of joining Petrocaribe include payment in installments, which allows the country to use funds previously allocated to pay in cash to produce basic grains, corn, beans and rice, as well as give a boost to stockbreeding and small businesses.

Petrocaribe is an oil alliance promoted by the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela to sell oil to Caribbean countries on preferential terms. It was launched by President Hugo Chavez in June 2005.
