Nicaragua Looks at Renewable Energy
Managua - The 13th Regional Forum on
renewable energy in isolated rural Central
American sites starts Wednesday here, to
boost and take advantage of the potential
existing in the area.
The meeting, to be run until March 20, will
analyze several aspects on sustainable
development and renewable energies,
especially sustainable energy strategies for
the area.
A delegation from the Alliance in Energy and
Environment with Central America (AEA),
which expect to invest over $1.5 million USD
in 22 additional projects implemented in
this nation.
The event will also present technological
applications in renewable energies, with the
participation of companies from Finland and
Austria.
According to statistics, Nicaragua has a
renewable energy potential in hydroelectric,
geothermic, eolian and biomass plants with
5.480 megawatts, in which the country only
uses 195 megawatts.
Among renewable sources are the Tumarin
project. It will include 160 megawatts as of
water resources and could be implemented by
2013.
Delegations from all Central American
nations, Dominican Republic, Finland,
Austria, as well as Energy and Mining
Minister Emilio Rappaccioli, Environment and
Natural Resources Minister Juana Argenal are
expected to attend the meeting.
