Legislator Proposes
Raising Fines For False
9-1-1 Calls
Up to 80% of all calls
to a the 9-1-1 emergency
service are false and to
reduce the number
legislator, Fernando
Sánchez, is proposing
tough fines for those
who continue to abuse
the emergency service
number. The proposal
presented yesterday to
the Legislative Assembly
is following a year of
process at the Comisión
de Asuntos Sociales
level.
The proposal establishes
a fine of 25% of the
minimum salary for up to
5 false calls; 50% for
between 5 and 10 false
calls; and 100% if more
than 10 false calls are
registered.
Sánchez said that
critics feel the fine is
too high and he agrees,
but the objective is to
remove the incentives of
a person making false
calls and tying
emergency services.
Sánchez added that
people have to
understand that the
9-1-1 is to save lives.
Most of the false calls
come from a public
telephone, Sánchez
added.
Other changes proposed
in the legislation is to
give the 9-1-1 service
the authority to invest
funds raised from fines
to necessary projects to
better the system, like
improving computer
systems, radio
communications and for
the purchase of
ambulances and fire
fighting equipment. |
