Few Drivers Use
Re-Opened Interamericana
Sur On First Day
Although the
Interamericana Sur was
partially re-opened
yesterday morning at
5:00am after almost two
weeks of being closed,
traffic officials say
few drivers passed
through the Cerro de la
Muerte.
The Interamericana Sur
or Route 2 was closed to
all traffic through
kilometre 112 after a
landslide washed away
the road. Work crews
have been busy
compacting earth to
rebuild the roadway and
yesterday passage
through the area was
restricted between 5am
and 5pm, depending on
the weather conditions.
César Cordero, an
official of the Policía
de Tránsito de San
Isidro de El General,
said that few vehicles
were on the road in the
morning hours, volume
picking between 12 noon
and 2pm.
Drivers continue to use
the Costanera Sur to get
to and from the Central
Valley and the Southern
Zone. One of the reasons
for drivers preferring
the longer route of the
Costanera is due to the
risk of more landslides
along the Interamericana
and fear of being
trapped like the 900
people two weeks ago
that has to wait up to
40 hours for emergency
crews to clear the road.
For the time being the
MOPT has set a speed fo
40 Kmh through the area
as traffic has to
maneuver around work
crews and machinery
clearing the mud and
debris.
Warning signs have been
posted along the
affected area warning
drivers to reduce their
speed and use extreme
caution, as mud on the
side of the road has
been the cause of more
than one vehicle getting
stuck.
