Mock Inspection
Although there is an
evident increase in the
quantity of motorcycles
and scooters on the
country's roads, mainly
due to ever rising high
gasoline prices, a
recent report shows that
the number of vehicles
passing through the
Riteve inspections has
remained the same.
What that means is that
many of the motorcycles
and scooters are not
being submitted to
inspection as they are
required.
Although the exact
number of two wheeled
vehicles circulating
without the inspection
is not known, the
importing of these types
of vehicles went from
6.000 per year in 2003
to 41.887 om 2007.
However, the number of
these types of vehicles
inspected is about the
same for each year.
Trailers are another
type of vehicle that is
avoiding being
inspected. Riteve
figures show only 461
trailers were inspected
in 2007, although there
are more than 10.000
registered in the
country.
Riteve officials say
that the major cause of
failed trailer
inspections is due to
faulty brakes. According
to Riteve reports, 67%
of all trailers
inspected do not pass
inspection.
What the numbers show is
that the country is full
of trailers operating
without inspections.
Fernando Mayorga,
general manager of
Riteve, said that
although the tractor is
in perfect mechanical
condition, if the
trailer is not, like
slick tires, faulty
brakes, etc., the
results can be
disastrous.
Mayorga added that the
main cause of passenger
vehicles failure to pass
inspection is exhaust
emissions, brake
failures, worn tires and
missing bumpers.
As taxis go, the major
reason for failure is
altered taxi meters or
lack of seatbelts.
Buses failing
inspections also show
problems with brakes and
faults in axles and
suspension.
