Regulator Begins Study
on Changes in Gasoline
Prices Request
The Autoridad Reguladora
de Servicios Públicos (Aresep)
- the regulator of
public prices and
services - today begins
its study on the request
by the Refinadora
Costarricense de
Petroléo S.A. (Recope) -
the national refinery -
on a reduction of the
price of gasoline and an
increase in diesel fuel.
Once the request is
approved, the price of a
litre of super and
regular gasoline will
drop at the pumps by ¢85
ad ¢65 colones,
respectively, while the
price of diesel will
jump ¢31 colones.
The price drop is being
welcomed, however, the
increase in diesel is
not welcomed by many
users, especially
business and transport
companies who mainly use
diesel powered vehicles.
If the increase is
approved, the price of a
litre of diesel will
jump from the current
¢427 to ¢458 colones, or
7.26%.
The increase request
also includes the price
of compressed gas that
will see the price jump
from the current ¢327 to
¢346 colones per litre.
Compressed gas is used
in a large number of
homes for cooking, as
well as most
restaurants.
Before the Aresep an
authorize any price
changes it has to hold a
public hearing, allowing
consumers an opportunity
to voice their opinion
on the subject and then
publish the change in
the official government
publication La Gaceta.
It is expected that any
prices changes could be
in effect before the end
of the month.
