Brazilian congressional
committee to target
deforestation in Amazon
Brazil's Chamber of
Deputies wants to form a
congressional committee
to investigate
deforestation in the
Amazon region, the
Brazilian press reported
on Thursday.
The chamber's Commission
for the Environment and
Sustainable Development
approved the proposal
made by Deputy Nelson
Pinto who used data
provided by the
government to justify
the request for an
investigation committee.
The National Space
Research Institute (INPE)
recently released a
study showing that
illegal deforestation
has increased,
especially in the states
of Para and Rondonia, in
northern Brazil, and in
the state of Mato Grosso,
in the mid-west.
"We do not intend to
investigate specific
cases of deforestation.
We need to understand
how destruction occurs
in the Amazon forest,
its causes and
consequences, as well as
to identify those to
blame for it," said
Pinto, who presides over
the commission.
He has suggested
investigations focus on
deforestation over the
past 10 years.
To install the
committee, the
commission still needs
to collect signatures
from 171 federal
deputies.
