El Salvador Bus Workers
to Strike
Members of the
Salvadorean Bus Business
Association confirmed on
Wednesday that they will
go on a national strike
if the government fails
to meet their demands on
the price of fuels.
Association leaders
demand a top price of $2
per gallon of diesel,
with the rest subsidized
to face the impact of
the high cost of fuels,
which went from $2.50 in
January to nearly 3.28
currently.
According to President
Antonio Saca, his
administration is trying
to reach an agreement
with bus business people
to avoid the announced
strike.
The government has no
money to fund operations
in the sector, he said.
Saca said a number of
measures are being
discussed with
representatives of the
sector. However, the
transportation workers
reiterated that they
will go on strike on
November 5 if no
agreement is reached
with government
