Venezuelan students
protest against
constitutional
amendments
Thousands of students
marched through the
Venezuelan capital
Caracas Thursday to
protest against a
referendum on
constitutional
amendments.
The students demanded a
two-month delay for the
Dec. 2 referendum, which
will ask the public to
give the government
control of international
reserves, establish a
new distribution of
political territory,
eliminate
decentralization and
remove the limits on how
many terms the president
may serve.
National Electoral
Council (CNE) president
Tibisay Lucena, whose
group was tasked with
organizing the
referendum, met with
student representatives.
The protest march began
at Venezuela's Central
University (UCV) and
advanced some blocks to
the CNE building, where
some students tried to
chain themselves to
stairway rails, an
attempt frustrated by
the National Guards.
The crowd was later
dispersed by the guards
using tear gas and water
cannons. Some students
were injured in the
struggle, but no serious
injures were reported.
The National Assembly
will present the
constitutional
amendments to electoral
officials Friday.
