Thousands of Children Work in Panama
More than 50,000 children and adolescents
currently work in Panama, in a situation of
economic exploitation, most of them in
agriculture and services, The International
Labor Organization (ILO) revealed.
According to ILO National Coordinator Briseida
Barrantes, although this country is a signatory
of two international agreements about child
labor, it has not been enough to eradicate this
scourge.
Barrantes made these statements during the First
Meeting of Parliamentary Women towards
Definition of Legislative Strategies to
Eradicate Child Labor in Panama.
Women, Child, and Family Affairs Committee
President Maricruz Padilla, considered those
data were alarming.
ILO numbers reveal that indigenous children are
the most affected by that scourge, due to the
highest poverty rates among the autochthonous
populations.
That institution said the indigenous children´s
labor activity rates double, and even triple,
the national average rate.
