Nicaraguans OK Canadian Electricity Venture
The Sandinista government of Nicaragua gave a
vote of confidence by renewing contract to the
Canadian company Polaris Energy on a geothermic
electricity project.
Since it assumed power last January, the new
government challenged the contract signed with
ex President Arnoldo Aleman (1997-2002) but the
Ministry for Energy and Mining renewed it
Tuesday.
Attorney General Hernan Estrada said the project
protects national interests.
Under development in San Jacinto Tizate, over 62
miles north west Managua, the project can
generate 200 mW but has just generated seven mW
since its arrival So Polaris promised to rise
supplies to the National Electricity System to
66 mW by 2009.
State-run and private plants have supplied 80
percent of the 500 mW daily national demand, but
their being oil consumers makes the process more
expensive.
