Earthquake hits central
Chile
An earthquake with a
magnitude of 5.8 hit
central Chile on
Thursday, shaking
buildings in Santiago
but causing no serious
damage to major cities.
The quake, which
reportedly struck at
3:25 p.m. (1925 GMT),
had its epicenter 93
miles (150 km) north of
the port city of
Valparaiso and 118 miles
(198 km) north of
Santiago.
It was felt strongly in
the greater Santiago
region, and Valparaiso
and Rancagua cities, but
more moderately in La
Serena, Talca and San
Antonio.
An official from the
government's natural
disaster center ONEMI
said there were no
immediate reports of
material damage.
