Nicaragua Annuls Bolaños
Election
The decision by
Nicaragua's Supreme
Electoral Council (CSE)
to annul the
registration and
subsequent election of
conservative deputy
Alejando Bolaños
dominated political
discussion Thursday in
the Central American
country.
CSE determined that ex
President Enrique
Bolanos's nephew
violated the
Constitution, because he
did not renounce his US
citizenship four years
before Election Day, as
stipulated, but only
three months before the
November elections.
The birthplace of the
ALN (Liberal Alliance)
legislator is also an
issue, since he admits
he was born in Missouri,
US, but has an identity
card stating his birth
was registered in Masaya,
18 miles south of
Managua.
Bolanos and the ALN
challenged the CSE
decision, describing it
as an illegal political
act, and asked the
unicameral Congress to
setup a special
committee to analyze the
