Governing Party Gains Force in Panama
With the
acceptance of 62,000 new members, Panama´s
governing PRD (Democratic Revolutionary Party)
now has nearly half of the country´s voter
registration sewn up, sources from that faction
informed on Friday.
Secretary for election affairs and mobilization,
Luis Nava, pointed out that 62,218 Panamanians
enrolled on Sunday, a figure surpassing
memberships in the People s and National Liberal
parties, the country´s two smallest factions.
With the newcomers, the PRD now has 556,563
members, representing 47.5 percent of the
population empowered to vote, according to the
party s figures.
Panama currently has seven parties represented
in Congress, and six other parties, and
opposition factions admit only an electoral
alliance could defeat the PRD in the 2009
general elections, although no agreement has
been yet reached.
