El Salvador Off Beam with Crime

El Salvador human rights
attorney Beatrice de Carrillo
strongly criticized the
Executive Monday for focusing
the fight against crime chiefly
in new bills, such as
anti-terrorism.
De Carrillo emphasized that
government officials will not
stop violence just by giving
orders.
De Carrillo noted that there are
laws on the books, a
Constitution, and a legal
system, but they are applied
only in case of violation, and
prevention is not considered.
She pointed out that whether or
not an anti terrorism bill
passes, violence will remain the
same, more people will be
arrested for insignificant
things, like demonstrating in
the streets, but gang leaders
will remain difficult to
control.
De Carrillo also noted that
extermination or social
cleansing groups now exist in El
Salvador, where what is needed
is more respect for the common
citizen.
