Guatemalan Troops to UN Haitian Mission
A Guatemalan military contingent of 80 soldiers and officers went to Port-au-Prince Monday to relieve the forces participating in the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti.

This is the forth group of Guatemalans sent to that nation to join the multinational force of 8,900 soldiers intended to guarantee peace.

For the first time, the Guatemalan unit includes a Honduran officer, trained in the northern department of Coban, created with the financial and technical support of the US.

After Rene Preval took office in May, the controversy over whether to keep the UN Mission in Haitian territory has increased.

Legislators, politicians and members of social organizations continue to insist on the need to reevaluate the role of that force and to demand a major operation in the fight against insecurity.
