Guatemala Calls for Anti-Drug Policy
Guatemala´s Acting President Eduardo Stein called Monday for a more integral policy against drug traffic that actively involves the consuming countries.

As long as it entails only the producing or transit countries, the solution will be incomplete, Stein told the media after opening a meeting on the fight against Drug Traffic and Related Crimes in Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico.

Participants in Monday´s meeting are focusing on possible endorsement of Guatemala as headquarters of a Regional Anti-Drug Center.

Echoing Stein´s warning that this is the most serious threat facing these countries, Minister of Interior Carlos Vielmann noted that Guatemala is experiencing very difficult and delicate moments caused by organized crime, which has corrupted State structures.

He said creation of an anti-drug center would constitute an effort by regional countries and did not rule out US participation through its different agencies.

The meeting is attended by representatives of El Salvador, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Mexico and the host nation.
