Group Wants Gay Marriages
Legalized
The Movimiento Diversidad, a
group that is intent on
convincing Costa Rican lawmakers
to allow civil marriages between
partners of the same sex, has
presented a bill that would
legalize such unions.
The group has chosen this month,
the month when Costa Rica
celebrates its independence, to
defend the rights of homosexuals
and lesbians. The group want to
have their rights just like any
other citizen.
The proposed law was presented
to the Legislature, that would
allow any person over the age of
18 to marry another person of
the same sex, in that way
inheritances, health and
financial benefits can be shared
by the couple as in a "normal"
marriage.
The group's efforts not only
include the introduction of the
law but a direct effort to lobby
legislators to approve it.
Abelardo Araya, president of the
Movimiento Diversidad, said that
their efforts are such that when
the bill hits the legislative
floor, the majority of
legislators will have already
decided to approve it.
