INTEL Announced Job Cuts
Include Costa Rica Facility
The world's largest computer
chip maker announced yesterday
massive job reductions in all
its some 200 plants around the
world, as it cuts some 10.000
jobs or 10% of its work force.
Intel workers in Costa Rica will
not escape the axe.
Intel says the cutbacks are for
restructuring following an
analysis of the company's
structure and efficiency. As a
result of the restructuring, the
company expects to generate
savings in costs and operating
expenses of approximately us$2
billion in 2007. In 2008 the
company expects savings from
this restructuring to grow to
approximately us$3 billion
annually.
Intel says that most job
reductions this year will occur
in management, marketing and
information technology
functions. In 2007, the
reductions will be more broadly
based as Intel improves labor
efficiency in manufacturing,
improves equipment utilization,
eliminates organizational
redundancies, and improves
product design methods and
processes.
The announcement by Intel did
not specify the number of jobs
that will be cut at Intel Costa
Rica, the company saying that
the decision affecting Costa
Rica has yet to be made.
Intel employs 3.400 at its
facilities located in San
Antonio de Belén.
