Costa Rica Rejects Negotiator
Costa Rica notified the other
Central American nations and the
European Union (EU) that it
rejects the appointment of the
Nicaraguan Minister of Foreign
Affairs, Norman Caldera, as
chief negotiator for the isthmus
in an eventual free trade
agreement with the EU.
Among
other reasons, the decision was
made without asking for Costa
Rica’s opinion in an issue that
demands Central American
consensus, Costa Rican Minister
of Foreign Affairs Bruno Stagno
said.
Furthermore, Caldera has
promoted the establishment of
trade barriers against countries
that have any diplomatic
conflicts with Nicaragua,
Honduras and Costa Rica among
them.
Currently, Costa Rican
exports account for 60 percent
of the Central American sales to
the European Union, analysts
point out as one of the facts
that strengthens the need for
this country to be taken into
consideration when making this
type of decisions.
