Guatemala, Who Owns National Resources?
Hundreds of farmers from Santa Eulalia in northwest Guatemala are gathered in front of Congress Thursday to condemn the exploitation of mining resources by multinational corporations.

They travelled to Guatemala City to present the results of a referendum held there August 29, when inhabitants of Santa Eulalia rejected the indiscriminate exploitation of their resources, as did residents in five other north-western municipalities of Huehuetenango..

Guatemala should use its resources to benefit people and should not grant privileges to firms that take all the profits, use up the reserve and bring more poverty to the nation, coordinator Daniel Mateo told Prensa Latina.

Foreign firms have always coveted the gold, silver and zinc deposits of this region.
