Panama Government Performance
Decried
Panama´s National Front in
Defense of Economic and Social
Rights (FRENADESO) criticized
President Martin Torrijos on
Thursday, saying that debt and
public insecurity have increased
during his term in office.
A FRENADESO note also denounced
government plans to sign a free
trade agreement with the US and
the project of Free Trade Area
of the Americas, both
detrimental to national
interests.
During his two years in power,
the Torrijos Administration has
pursued the same economic
policies that lead to increased
poverty, unemployment and
negligence, the note added.
FRENADESO also questioned the
privatization of funds of the
Social Welfare Fund.
In the text, FRENADESO, which
groups unions and social
movements, ratified its
opposition to the broadening and
deepening of the Panama Canal,
and calls on the people to
reject the proposal in a
referendum to be held October
22.
Over two million Panamanians are
expected to go to the polls that
day, to decide on the
construction of a third set of
locks for the Canal, estimated
at 5.25 billion dollars.
