Guatemala Deputy in Fraud
Jaime Martinez Lohayza, chief of the governing party Gran Alianza Nacional, was implicated Thursday in a fraud scandal of 1.4 million quetzals (over $130,000 USD) with the National Mortgage Credit of Guatemala.

According to a report, the deputy, in conspiracy with some employees, modified information system registrations to evade payment of two credits requested between 1994 and 2004.

Martinez Lohayza simulated the cancellation of the debt through a fraudulent operation by adding numbers to small quantities to make them seem larger.

The operation was repeated several times until the debts had allegedly been paid.

The errant deputy even sent a letter in 2005 to the Bank's Directive Board to return 400,000 quetzals (some $53,000 USD) that he had allegedly overpaid, which the institution indeed returned.
