Venezuela, Guatemala Boost
Panama in UN
Venezuela and Guatemala are due
to formally present Panama at
the UN Latin American and
Caribbean Group (GRULAC) as an
acceptable candidate to fill a
seat at the Security Council.
The proposal of Panama was
agreed upon as formula of
commitment for intensive
negotiations held Wednesday
between Venezuela s Foreign
Minister Nicolas Maduro and his
Guatemalan counterpart Gert
Rosenthal.
Both countries maintained until
Wednesday their candidatures to
entering the Security Council,
after neither of the two
countries being able to achieve
two thirds of votes, after 47
voting rounds since October 16.
During negotiations, which were
held in the Ecuador mission at
the UN, foreign ministers from
Venezuela and Guatemala decided
to withdraw their candidatures
in favor of a formula to end the
stagnation.
The announcement that both
States agree to propose Panama
as an acceptable candidate took
place after foreign ministers
Maduro and Rosenthal met with
their respective governments.
The aim of today s gathering
among ambassadors from 35 GRULAC
member countries is to formally
learn Panama s proposal as
candidate of commitment to be
later approved.
Venezuela and Guatemala hoped to
fill Argentina s vacant post in
that top organization on
December 31 as non-permanent
member of the Security Council
for Latin America and the
Caribbean.
