Deported Salvadoran Children Increasing
The number of Salvadoran children sent back to their homeland from Mexico has increased considerably compared with last year, according to Salvadoran Consul to Tapachula, Mexico, Nelson Cuellar.

At least 460 Salvadoran minors were deported in 2005, he said.

So far this year, the National Immigration Institute of Mexico sent back 651 children, including 424 girls and 227 boys, he added.

According to figures provided by the Immigration General Direction, at least 2,169 Salvadoran children were sent back by Mexico and the US.

The Central American Center for Population Affairs cites insecurity, poverty and the lack of job opportunities, mainly in rural areas, as main causes for about 720,000 Salvadorans to emigrate every year.

This situation makes many minors to leave the country to meet up with their parents again, according to a study carried out by the Center of Central American Resources, CARECEN International.
