Cuba to Achieve Millennium Goals
The Central American
Parliament´s President (PARLACEN)
Julio Palacios highlighted on
Monday Cuba´s aim to reduce
poverty, access to education and
health and decrease of the
infant mortality concerning the
UN Millennium Goals.
"Cuba is the only country in the
Caribbean and in Latin America
that surpassed almost all areas
of the Millennium Goals,"
Palacios declared to Prensa
Latina on occasion of the
parliamentarian summit that is
in session in the Guatemalan
capital.
The meeting that joins
legislators of America, Europe
and Africa has as a central
issue the analysis of the
contribution of the legislative
organs to achieve UN goals.
The development goals try to
reduce extreme poverty and
hunger, achieve the universal
primary teaching, decrease
infant mortality, stop the
spread of AIDS and support the
environment.
In America Latina, only a few
countries have been able to
progress in that sense and
others have even decreased since
2000, the PALACEN President
declared.
More than 200 million people
live in poverty in Latin
American and the Caribbean.
Palacios announced the PARLACEN
will present in the summit a
proposal of strategic alliance
among governments, integration
parliaments, local legislative
organs and society to achieve
the UN goals.
