Panama Debates Canal Extension
The periods to call for a
referendum in Panama in 2006 may
shorten when the project to
enlarge the Canal enters
National Assembly discussion.
After being okayed by the
Cabinet Council and the
parliamentary chamber, the
expansion plan, at a cost of
5.25 billion dollars, will
shortly go to the hands of the
Electoral Court (EC).
The program is successfully
advancing despite considerations
of the expensive cost of its
investment, the eventual
indebtedness of the nation and
its alleged unnecessary nature.
According to Parliament Speaker
Elias Castillo, deputies will
brainstorm the issue for nearly
two weeks in a clear and
exhaustive process to fulfil all
steps needed.
Now, legislators are in charge
to buttress the project and
later submit it to the EC with a
date recommended to hold the
national referendum.
The EC will have between 90 and
120 days to call for the
plebiscite.
