More Hospitals Join Strike in Guatemala
The San Juan de Dios Hospital in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala´s third largest city, on Monday joined the strike that began one month ago in several health centers to demand material, medicines and equipment.

Alvaro Gomez, president of the Medical Association, said that starting today, outpatient services will be closed and only emergencies will be treated.

The San Juan de Dios Hospital treats some 800 patients from western departments every day.

At least 15 hospitals throughout the country have joined the strike, which began June 9 at Roosevelt Hospital, the most important in the capital.

Doctors complain about a lack of drugs, such as analgesics and antibiotics, as well as the poor condition of equipment and surgical instruments.
