Nicaragua Power Plant an Issue
Nicaragua is enmeshed in
controversy over a hydroelectric
project that may finally solve
its current energy crisis, but
raises socio-ecological
concerns.
Authors of the billion-dollar
COPALAR project, suspended since
the 70s, claim it will generate
630 megawatts daily but its
execution involves flooding
nearly 131 square miles of land.
Radio La Primerisima says
residents in affected areas,
namely Paiwas, reject arguments
that these are unproductive
lands, adding that they will
fight even with firearms if
necessary.
While some organizations express
environmental concerns, Vice
President-elect Jaime Morales
Carazo calls to leave the final
decision to the Sandinista
Cabinet that will assume office
January 10.
The National Assembly has also
suspended debate on the legal
terms of the construction until
legislators return on January 9.
