Salvadorian Deputies Debate Exception Regime
Salvadorian lawmakers on Tuesday debated the implementation of an exception regime to fight crime in the country, an initiative that has been rejected by some sectors that have warned against its negative consequences.

The proposal from the National Coalition Party is more radical than that of the Democratic Christians, while the governing Nationalist Republican Alliance approves both initiatives.

Representatives of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) at the Assembly opposed the proposal presented by the right-wing parliamentarians.

The implementation of an exception regime, as established in Article 29 of the Constitution, would mean the imposition of restrictions on the citizens´ rights, the said.

According to FMLN lawmakers, the people could see their freedom of association, expression and intimacy (violation of correspondence and telephone conversations) limited.

In the light of the FMLN´s stance, some legislators said that the restrictions established in the Magna Carta would not be implemented.

According to official statistics, an average of 10 people are murdered every day in El Salvador, a number that increases during holidays.
