Nicaraguan Literacy Campaign
Highlighted
Thousands of Nicaraguans
gathered in Managua on Wednesday
to mark the 26th anniversary of
the National Literacy Campaign
promoted by the Sandinista
Popular Revolution in the 80s.
At least 100,000 teachers were
mobilized in the effort, which
was recognized by UNESCO in
1981, as it reduced illiteracy
to less than 13 percent.
Today s gathering at Managua s
Peace Square, was presided over
by Secretary General of the
Sandinista National Liberation
Front Daniel Ortega, and
attended by other important
political personalities.
Ortega recalled the
breakthroughs and difficulties
in the implementation of the
previous Sandinista campaign,
and highlighted the social scope
of the current program ó Yes, I
Can ó , which has been
implemented with Cuban
cooperation.
At least 20,000 Nicaraguans in
75 municipalities have been
taught to read and write by the
Cuban method in the past year.
The target is to reach 50,000 by
2007.
