Guatemalan President Disses
Congress
Claiming he only came to give a
ó courteous message ó ,
Guatemalan President Oscar
Berger walked out of a meeting
with the leadership of the
Congress of the Republic
Wednesday, met to discuss a
package of security bills with
him.
The meeting, for which the
congress people had waited a
week, was to be held in a hotel
in Guatemala City, where
deputies are participating in a
seminar for reforms to the
penitentiary system.
When President Berger arrived,
Deputy Anabella de Leon, of the
Patriot Party, criticized him
for having waited until his
third in office to meet with
Congress looking for consensus.
Berger explained he was there
for approval of laws to fight
organized crime, drug-traffic
and common crimes, and then he
stopped the meeting without
giving the legislators an
opportunity to give their
opinions.
He told local press that he ó
didn t come to answer questions
ó and that the Guatemalan
population is waiting for these
bills to be approved, and they
would be a fine tool for the
Executive in its efforts to
fight crime.
