Pacheco
Warns About Agreement
"The people have to understand
that without the agreement we
would go hungry," said this week
pesident Abel Pacheco about the
about the Central
America-Dominican Republic -
United States Free Trade
Agreement (CAFTA).
The agreement is known locally
as the Tratado Libre de Comercio
(TLC) and has generated a lot of
controversy as Costa Rica is the
only signatory to the agreement
that has yet to ratify.
The chief executive, who is to
step down on May 8, when
president-elect Oscar Arias will
be inaugurated as the new head
of state of Costa Rica, said so
in the next to last meeting of
the Government Council at
Presidential House.
Pacheco had postponed sending
the CAFTA to the Legislative
Assembly as part of his strategy
to gain time for other projects
of his, but now emphasizes the
need to approve the treaty.
