Incofer Moves Railway Brdige From Alajuela to Tibás
Workers of the Instituto Costarricense de Ferrocarriles (Incofer) - the state agency for trains and railroads - having working for the last three weeks to move a 24 metre (79 feet) bridge, that weighs some 30 tonnes, from Río Segundo in Alajuela (near the international airport) to Cinco Esquinas de Tibás, north of San José.

The move is widen the passage for the commuter train that is soon to start making runs from San José to Heredia.

Miguel Carabaguíaz, president of Incofer, said this is the first time the institution has performed such a move.

Incofer decided to move the almost 100 year old bridge because it is almost never used in Alajuela and with proper maintenance will be if use in Tibás for many years to come, said Carabaguíaz.

The bridge was literally pulled from its roots and will be transported by road to its new location this morning (Saturday). If all goes well, the bridge could be in its new location by the end of the day and workers will begin to secure the structure.

Carabaguíaz said the move and construction of a small bridge at Río Segundo is cheaper than building a new structure at Tibás, where the commuter train will be making multiple daily runs across the bridge.

Carabaguíaz added that once the structure is in place it will not be long before regular service will begin between Universidad Latina in Lourdes de Montes de Oca (San Pedro) and Cuatro Reinas de Tibás. The route will have in between stops at Colima, Cinco Esquinas and Terminal del Atlántico (old Fercori).

Once this project is complete, Incofer will be then working on extending the route to Heredia, which will connect that city to San José, with intent to reduce road traffic that has the main route between San José and Heredia bottlenecked during morning and afternoon rush hours.
