Gay-Lesbian Conference Underway
in Heredia
More than 100 persons from all
over Central and South America
have gathered in Heredia for the
first "Conferencia Nacional GLBT"
(conference of gay, lesbian,
bi-sexual and transsexuals). The
conference generated much
controversy over the past month
but began as scheduled yesterday
without any problems.
Abelardo Araya, organizer of the
conference, says that brothers
and sisters from Argentina,
Chile, El Salvador, Panama,
Mexico and Costa Rica are
gathering to discuss and attend
workshops on the gay-lesbian
issues and health matters,
especially the impact of AIDS on
the gay community.
The conference began formally
last night with no protests or
demonstrations.
The conference will also include
discussions on the sexual rights
of gays, politics and social
issues and will have a formal
statement ready for
president-elect Oscar Arias whe
he takes office on May 8.
A discussion on the Tratado
Libre de Comercio (TLC) - free
trade agreement with the United
States - will be part of the
event, according to organizers,
which will focus on the effect
of the cost of medication for
AIDS patients.
The conference will also see the
attendance of a number of
legislative deputies-elect,
mainly José Merino, of the
Frente Amplio, Oscar López, of
the Partido Accesibilidad Sin
Exclusión (PASE) and Andrea
Morales of the Partido Acción
Ciudadana (PAC).
