Semana Santa Fast Approaching
Semana Santa is fast approaching. Beginning this Friday (April 7) and continuing until Tuesday April 18, Costa Rica will be in "holiday" mode, as many will head to the beach and mountain resorts around the country.

Many businesses will give their employees the entire 10 days off. All government employees will leave work on the 7th and back on the 17th. Bank will be open the 10th, 11th and 12th, but will be closed on the 13th and 14th, some will re-open on the 17th. Check with your local branch for their holiday hours.

The official holiday says are Thursday (13th) and Friday (14th) when Costa Rica once again becomes dry for the two days. A proposal to rescind the law that prohibits the sale of liquor and beer on those two days has yet to be approved. All restaurants cannot offer their patrons alcohol with a meal. Bars for the most part will be closed for the two days and supermarkets must close off their liquor section.

For those leaving San José for the beaches and mountains, more buses will be available according to the Consejo de Transporte Público (CTP), who has authorized bus companies to add more buses and frequency to their routes.

For those staying in San José, they will notice a marked difference in the traffic and pollution during the week. The pedestrian area of downtown San José will be less congested than usual during the entire week, almost desolate Thursday to Sunday of Semana Santa.
