Drop in
Business Ranking
From 2001 to 2005, Costa Rica
went from position 46 to 49
among the countries with the
best business environment, in
the annual survey of the
analysis division of The
Economist, which measures that
indicator in the economies of 82
nations.
The study also takes in
market opportunities, policies
towards private business, the
fiscal system, the labor market,
and the development of
infrastructure.
A majority of
Latin American countries also
lost positions in the ranking,
which also considers the
political and economic context,
as well as the macro-economic
stability of the studied
nations.
The lack of
competitiveness is considered a
growing problem in the economies
of the region, and Costa Rica's
in particular, according to
local analysts.
