Alert For Effects of Hurricane
Emily
An alert has been declared by
the Comisión Nacional de
Emergencias (CNE) for two areas
in Costa Rica that may be
affected Emily, the hurricane in
the Caribbena sea.
The hurricane may affect Costa
Rica indirectly today (Saturday)
and Sunday as the Caribbean
Coast and the Central Valley may
see more than normal rain and
strong winds.
The alert allows public
institutions to quickly respond
to emergencies if necessary,
like the case of the Ministerio
de Obras Públicas y Transportes
(MOPT), which can control and
regulate traffic along the major
routes and mobilize equipment to
clear any roadblocks due
mudslides.
Mudslides along the Braulio
Carrillo highway that connects
the Central Valley to Limon are
common during heavy rain. The
MOPT has some 40 trucks, 3
backhoes and 3 loaders on
standby for any eventuality.
The first effects of the
hurricane were felt yesterday
evening when it began raining -
pouring in some area - and
continued into the night and
many parts of the Central Valley
this morning (Saturday) are
still under cloud and rain.
