Tibás Garbage Men on Strike. Again.
Tibás will again stink of garbage, as Municipal garbage men and other workers in charge of clean up of the Municipality go on an indefinite strike today. At issue are salaries.

The Asociación Nacional de Empleados Públicos y Privados (ANEP) - the worker's union - says the workers have not been paid their salary adjustment for the first half of the year. The union is also asking that the Municipality guarantee it's members that they will allocate the financial resources in their budget.

The workers also are concerned about their salary raise for second half of the year that just began.

Albino Vargas, secretary general of the ANEP, says the Municipality owes the workers a considerable amount of money and there is no certainty if there is the political will to pay up.

This is not the first time the Municipalidad de Tibás workers go on strike. The last strike was for a similar problem that left the city garbage piling up, as it will undoubtably happen this time also.

In this go around of the strike, the workers hope to get the attention of the Contraloría General de la República - the Comptroller's General. They claim that the Municipality is stalling and want the newly appointed Comptroller to step in.

The workers also say that in addition to not getting paid their salary increase, the Municipality is skimping on materials like garbage bags, shovels, brooms, etc. so that they can do their work properly.

The workers are asking for the understanding of the community and their support in forcing the Municipality to make good, as well as the intervention of the Ministro de Trabajo y Seguridad Social, Fernando Trejos, so that the strike won't be a prolonged one.
