Costa Rican Red Cross: 120 years
In 1885, because of fears of
war, then President Bernardo Soto decreed the establishment of a Red
Cross chapter in Costa Rica.
The organization remained in a latent state through 1917, when tens of
people were hurt in the explosion of a small fireworks plant and the
need for having a well-organized Red Cross became evident.
Throughout this time, the Red Cross has rendered excellent service to
all Costa Ricans. It now has 6,800 volunteers and 800 paid officials,
but its services are mostly free.
