Health Ministry Issue Alert For
Tainted Tilapia From China
In less than a week since the
Ministerio de Salud detected
toxic toothpaste in Costa Rican
stores and sent out the alert
for tainted tilapia fish
imported from China, said
yesterday the ministra de Salud
María Luisa Ávila.

water and
inflating itself
to appear much
larger. If it is
caught by
another fish, it
can still
enlarge itself
in the fish's
mouth, where
both fish will
die. Another
defense which
makes the Puffer
not an ideal
choice is that
the flesh of the
puffer is
suffused with
Tetrodotoxin, a
powerful
neurotoxin that
can cause death
in nearly 60% of
the humans that
ingest it. The
puffer inhabits
the warm waters
around China,
Japan, Taiwan
and the
Philippines. |
